I’ve been really trying to buckle down on my dissertation. It’s been way too long and I’ve gotten very little done, so I think I need some accountability.
So I’m going to post regular updates on this blog about my progress, aiming for weekly. I need something to keep me honest.
Right now, I’m working on the preliminary proposal. This is the thing I’m going to take to faculty when I ask them to be on my committee. It’s going to be about five pages long, and contain an overview of my plans for the project.
I’m almost done with it, but stuck a bit on reporting results. I’ve never been one for statistics, and have gotten by mainly by using methods where I could get away with merely descriptive statistics (like percentages) and not doing anything more complicated. That may have gotten me through term papers, but it’s not going to fly for a dissertation, so I need to figure some of that stuff out.
Once it’s done I’ll need to actually approach the faculty members. To be honest this is one of the scariest parts for me. I hate asking anyone to do something for me, even though I know it looks good on an academic CV to serve on a dissertation committee.
I’ll talk more about that later. For now I need to write.
