I really don’t like having to defend anything about Donald Trump. Look what you’ve made me do.
It came out that “President” Trump, following a physical, is supposedly 6’3″ and 239 pounds. Why we are supposed to care about this, I don’t know (actually I do — fatphobia), but those are the stats that were released.
And the world went wild.
He couldn’t possibly be that tall, he couldn’t possibly weigh that little, look at him, let’s compare him to an athlete of similar height and weight who looks completely different, etc etc etc.
(Side note: muscle and fat have different densities, so it actually IS possible for two people to be the same height and weight yet look entirely different.)
James Gunn, director of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, which until yesterday I greatly enjoyed, offered $100,000 for Trump to step on an “accurate” scale.
He’s even using the hashtag #Girther, mocking the racist “birther” nonsense Trump levied against Obama. This is fatphobia, pure and simple. Gunn can deny that all he wants (and he has), but all of these things he and others are saying are rooted in a culture that has disgust, contempt, and mockery for fat people.
I’m not going to mince words here: Trump is a hateful disgusting human being who has no business occupying his current office. He’s a harasser and rapist. He’s a racist sack of garbage. His policies are going to destroy families and kill people. He should be impeached and imprisoned.
However, NONE OF THIS HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH WEIGHT. All harping on his weight does is insult regular fat people and tell us that our bodies are the only thing that people see, and that those are deserving of ridicule and shame.
He is garbage. But he’s garbage for reasons that have nothing to do with fat. I’m not defending him. He is indefensible. But I AM defending all the everyday fat people who are harmed by weight-related oppression.
Just like how someone’s weight shouldn’t outshine their accomplishments, it also shouldn’t outshine Trump’s atrocities.
Making fun of someone’s weight is lazy, which is ironic since that’s usually exactly what that person is saying about fat people. It’s irrelevant, as are the people making these “jokes.” What someone weighs, what they look like, have no bearing on who they are as a person.
You can claim this is about Trump lying about his weight — how did he get a fake number released? Is this doctor under his thumb somehow?
I guess we’re ignoring the fact that you can’t tell someone’s exact height and weight by looking at them, no matter how smart of an internet doctor you think you are. But, for argument’s sake, let’s say he is lying about this.
Personally, I’m more concerned about his other lies — ones about collusion with Russia. Lies about how he “won” the election. Lies about his taxes. Lies about everything he does, because he is a horrible person and a horrible president. Lies that are going to rip families apart. Lies that are going to take away healthcare from millions of people. Lies that are going to destroy the civil rights people have spent decades fighting for. Lies that are going to get people killed.
I’m not concerned about someone lying about their weight. Even Trump.
Since we’re on the subject of weight, I’m not concerned that he’s fat, nor do I care what his eating and exercise habits are. Those have no bearing on the job he’s doing — which, by the way, he’s doing terribly.
Let’s get back to resisting him on things that actually matter.
